A crown is an artificial restoration for a tooth or teeth by placing a “cap” over the already existing tooth. There are several different types of crowns:
Full/Gold Crown
Made entirely of metal allows. They are most resistant to wear or breaking. However, due the metal color, they are typically used only on molars where they will be largely out of sight.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crown
This is the most common type of crown. It consists of a metal base with porcelain fused to it. The porcelain allows for matching of shades with the rest of the patient’s teeth. They wear on the opposite teeth slightly more than other types of crowns. Also, sometimes the metal base shows though, especially along the gum lines.
All Ceramic Crown
This type is becoming more and more popular. This type allows for the best shade matching because they do not have the grey alloys showing through.
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain, which is attached to the surface of the tooth in order to correct minor esthetic issues.
